Sandwich and some of the western Cape Sept 20, 2010

Monday morning. The weekday schedule at St Francis Xavier has a 7am Mass so I made that my "Sunday"  :) A quaint little white clapboard church with a bell tower. Its address is Hyannis. There was a plaque inside. It turned out to be the church where John F. Kennedy worshipped and the main altar was donated by his parents Joseph and Rose Kennedy in memory of their son, Joseph Patrick who died in 1944 during WWII. Here are some pics:

We started out early and shopped all day. Mostly in Sandwich and E. Sandwich. I was looking for a clock and Paula was interested in glass. There is a glass museum and factory in Sandwich. We found the best little shop that was set up in what used to be a cranberry barn. Its a gallery for local artists to display and sell their crafts. It's called the Black Crow...
The owner also makes and sells jam. There is a beach plum that grows in Cape Cod. I bought a jar of her beach plum jam and I'm having some on toast with hot tea as I update this blog :) Paula bought bracelets for souvenirs for her friends there. Another local fruit from the Cape is cranberries. At another shop this day we found cranberry jelly. I got a jar of that for a souvenir for a friend.

There was a framed sign inside the Black Crow that read "Be Nice Or Go Away" I asked if it were for sale, The woman (Maureen) said no, but everyday some customer asks the same question...
We ate lunch at a place called "Hemisphere" - right on the ocean. I had a Cape Cod Reuben made with haddock (instead of corned beef), coleslaw (instead of sauerkaut) but served with Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing and on rye bread - just like a traditional Reuben. It was wonderful. I took these pictures from the upper deck of that hotel. What a beautiful view of the sea!

This day I shopped and shopped for a clock. I wanted one from the Cape to go on top of my grandfather's bookcase that I inherited. The ones that were close to what I wanted were way out of my price range so it turned out that I never found one.  :(

We drove through NW Cape Cod and got back late.  Had dinner at "Tugboats" where I ate Maine lump crab cakes. Outstanding! After this trip I intend to eat a lot more fresh seafood. Its out of this world and so good for you.
